As a fan of Japanese scrapbooks, I caught the bug of collecting the random scraps of design you run into every day: sugar packets, wrapping string, envelopes with their crazy safety patterns inside, subway tickets, and so on. When I was moving I found a motherlode of such items at the Post Office, where I went to get a Change of Address form. Some of them are pictured here. Okay, I know they’re just business forms, but as a control freak, I can respect the time and thought that an anonymous government employee put into making those forms bulletproof. I’ll give her bonus points for the Hot Pink and Royal Blue color schemes, too. But perhaps the reason I really, really like them is that they remind me of good old HTML forms and tables, with boxes for everything important. I’ll be talking about how to create and use tables in the future. Before I knew better, my motto was: The secret to a great webpage layout is to use lots of embedded tables.
