I read in the New York Times that the Rijks Museum is offering hi-res downloads of many of the works of art in their collection. Their plan is to add 40,000 images every year! I browsed through their catalog and found a lot of beautiful floral paintings, a self-portrait by Van Gogh, some lovely etchings of cats, and best of all, several Vermeers. These are all free for personal use and high enough res that you can select portions of the images for use as backgrounds and textures. The license allows you to use these images on your websites and for other uses, too. For example, you might select a floral pattern and use it as a temporary tattoo (like the example on the Rijks website). I think these works of art would be great for greeting cards or just plain framed prints. And, while Modcloth shows how to use maps as nail transfers, you could modify their tutorial to use the glorious floral painting by Jan Davidsz de Heem instead. Check out the images I’ve saved in my Rijks Museum collection over here.
