Ben Chestnut
Creative Mornings Talk

“Create chaos. Embrace chaos. Nature loves chaos.”

Considering that I’ve just posted a link to his interview with Debbie Millman on Design Observer, it might seem that I’m rather obsessed with Ben Chestnut. Well, by golly gee, I most certainly am!

A Little Stir
Dylana Suarez @ Color Me Nana

“When I feel a little stir inside of me and I want to remember it, I’ll take a picture. A visual complement to a memory of a feeling that is worth every single second it took to get the lighting just right.”

How to Get Someone to Open an Email
Ben Chestnut of MailChimp, interviewed @ Design Observer

“Don’t send the email unless you have something to say. That might mean every quarter, that might mean only three times a year — it’s when companies start to feel the need to send something every week or every day or every single month no matter whether or not they have content.”

Today’s awesome socks and tights come from The White Pepper, which brings us iconic street-inspired fashion with a twinkle in its eye. And the matching font I’m using to put graffiti on these fab photos is Font Awesome, a collection of iconic… well, icons, actually. This is the second time I’ve featured Font Awesome. The first time was all about using it as a web font. This time, however, I’m using it as a desktop font in Photoshop to stamp circle icons on the polka socks, crossy characters on the print tights, and shower a little bit of thunder and on those very kawaii knee tights. Read on to see how you can use Font Awesome in Photohop!

Chill Out!
Telegramme Studio
My PMS mantra. ( One Sheepish Girl)

Paul Graham on Choices
Silicon Valley’s Start-up Machine by Nathaniel Rich, NYT

“When you have to talk yourself into something, it’s a bad sign — that’s true also of relationships, hiring and so many other parts of life.”

Noteworthy: Sketchbook Closet

I wish I could draw. A few years ago I signed up for an illustration course at Skyline College in San Bruno. As with most of my new endeavors, I was really enthusiastic. I had high hopes and high expectations, and my first drawings were pretty decent for a beginner. However, as the assignments became more complex and time-consuming, I soon discovered that I have neither the drive nor the temperament to practice drawing. In this case, merely liking something didn’t translate to actually being able to do it. I dropped the course mid-semester and that was that. Though I don’t have an aptitude for drawing/painting, I now have an even greater appreciation for those of you who do have the passion to master the arts and take it to a professional level. I admire so many artists: Gemma Correll, Katie Daisy, Rebekka Seale, Beth McNair, Ann Shen, Coco Skies, Danny Brito, Leah Goren, Ahoy Miss, and Laura Manfre are just a few…

And so it gave me great pleasure to stumble onto another artist’s blog yesterday: Sketchbook Closet. Katie Cadamatre’s blog is filled with beautiful illustrations of her day-to-day wardrobe, and helpful tips on how to take care of your clothes. I can really relate to her choice for favorite gadget — the sweater shaver — because I just spent an hour giving my pilled Gap sweater a haircut with a pair of scissors. And I’m especially taken by her custom mug diy and her drawing of her Army Green Parka. Katie has a beautiful site and I look forward to her updates ever more.

Eulogy for the Blog
Mark Tracy for The New Republic

“There is little sense in shouting against the wind, but the blog—the blog as a thematically or personally coherent space containing an individual’s or a subject’s specific interests, commitments, attitudes—was a great thing, and its decline is saddening… The blog was the right form for the right time, but it was also just plain right, and remains so. Sometimes the pace of technology leads us to do something that is substantially superior, and sometimes the pace of technology leads us to do something that is substantially inferior. It would be nice if we could step in when the mutation selected is a good one, and identify it as something worth saving. But I’m guessing there isn’t as much money in that.”

I’ve recommended WordPress plugins before, but that was almost three years ago. Since then I’ve experimented with many plugins, and it’s about time that I update my list. Of the original 15 plugins that I recommended, 6 have survived. I currently have 12 active plugins and I list them below according to their design values of delight, navigation, promotion, comment administration, and enhancements.
